What is joint replacement and why is it done?

Joint replacement is a surgical procedure that is designed to help relieve pain and improve function within the affected joint. It involves removing an arthritic or damaged joint and replacing it with an artificial joint made of metal, plastic or ceramic. This procedure can be performed on any damaged joint in the body, but the most common locations are the hip, knee and shoulder.

How does rehab help patients achieve the best surgical outcomes?

It is recommended to start using the new joint after surgery to ensure proper ROM (range of motion) and strength is achieved. In order to support the new joint and speed healing, it is important to start your rehab process immediately, which will typically consist of ROM and strengthening exercises. Soft tissue work is also common on the structures surrounding the joint since surgery can often lead to scar tissue development in the muscles, ligaments and tendons. Initially, some discomfort is common, but over time with the help of your healthcare team, you should be able to go back to doing the activities you love. It is common to feel confused after surgery but at Active Relief Centre, we emphasize education and goal setting. It is not uncommon to book an appoint prior to surgery so we can work with you to develop your post-surgical plan. Contact one of our clinics today and make us a part of your road to recovery.
